While off work after getting one's little self half crushed by a drunk driver who was being chased by the police, I got myself blinded with ammonia by 2 drug addicts while I was busy getting myself mugged at the cashpoint. After 14 weeks in hospital the surgeons restored the sight to one eye, the other, like my spine, is beyond repair. Aggrophobia, depression, chronic pain, partial blindness, constant infections, loss of hearing due to infections, tinnitus, and generally banging my face into everything really got me down, and spending my 'life' drinking my liver to death and watching 24 hour news wasn't helping. But I have a really good GP, one that cares. He demanded i get a hobby to keep my mind active and that led me back to photography, the hobby i gave up in my 20s because of my career. And it probably saved my life. Last Saturday, instead of killing a liter of scotch, I shot my best friend's son's wedding, and, by all accounts, did a good job of it (thank god!)Now my camera gets me out of the house, even when I don't want to (the BIG HEAVY monopod does help !) and while I do have to accept limitations to what I can and can't do, there are no limits to what you can do with a camera! Now, when I wake up in the morning, I can reach for the bottle, or the camera. I choose the camera
